Veteran SFRTA/Tri-Rail Official Praises Craftsmanship

Ft. Lupton, Colorado – On February 11, Colorado Railcar welcomed Jo Strang, Deputy Associate Administator of Railroad Development for the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and Steve Sill, Manager of the FRA’s DMU Demonstration Project. Just two days earlier, Brad Barkman, Director of Operations for SFRTA/Tri-Rail had arrived in Ft. Lupton for his periodic review.

After closely reviewing the complex wiring and welded piping on the underside of the DMU and the finished details of the Double Deck’s interior, Brad Barkman asked that Colorado Railcar’s line workers and fabricators accept his personal thanks for care taken in the execution of their craft. The Colorado Railcar employees involved were extremely proud to have their work praised by a railroad expert with such a broad base of technical knowledge and experience. The Double Deck DMU is in its final stages of construction as ADA lifts are being installed in the doorways on each side of the car. Colorado Railcar’s New “Train of the Future”
Purchased by Florida DOT

Pompano, Florida March 26, 2004 March 26, 2004 — The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA/Tri-Rail), representing the FRA and Florida DOT in a joint procurement agreement, approved the contract for the DMU Demonstration Project and authorized the acquisition of three commuter railcars, including a double deck DMU, a single level DMU, and a double deck low floor coach from Colorado Railcar Manufacturing in Fort Lupton, Colorado. The purchase includes the existing single-level DMU, which entered revenue service this past February, the newly designed double deck DMU and the new double deck low floor commuter coach. The new double deck DMU is currently in production at Colorado Railcar’s plant in Ft. Lupton, Colorado and will be delivered in April of 2005.

“We find the ‘regulars’ actually time their commute just to ride the DMU. They love the openness of the car and the seating. The engineers really appreciate the drivability of the DMU, and they especially like the quietness. ‘You can hear yourself think!’ is always the comment I get right away”.

to Colorado Railcar

Heralded as the “Train of the Future” for commuter rail, the DMU had just completed its inaugural nationwide tour when it was purchased and called into revenue service. The DMU demonstration project was initially made possible by the stalwart efforts of Florida Congressman John Mica. Representative Mica was intent on finding a cost effective commuter rail transportation solution for his district in Central Florida, which could serve as a model for the entire country. The federal appropriation and Florida DOT matching funds were put in place to initiate the project. SFRTA/Tri-Rail was selected to administer the DMU Demonstration Project and start the DMU in revenue service. The DMU is currently in daily revenue service for SFRTA/Tri-Rail from Miami International Airport to Boynton Beach.

Colorado Railcar Develops World’s First Double Deck DMU that Seats 188

Colorado Railcar’s successful history of producing the world’s largest double deck luxury passenger railcars has led to the recent development of the double deck DMU. The demand for the new double deck DMU became urgent following the success of Colorado Railcar’s innovative FRA compliant, single level DMU, which earned wide acclaim on its nationwide tour last year. With the success of the single level DMU, the development of both the bi-level DMU and bi-level coach was not far behind. Tom Janaky, Vice President of Sales for Colorado Railcar commented “We didn’t need to reinvent our DMU, we just added a second story.”

DMU Proves Its Power -
Conquers Alaska’s Mountainous Grade

Seward, Alaska - On July 31st at 10:00 pm on a beautiful evening in the Land of the Midnight Sun, the DMU with one passenger car in tow stopped at milepost 49.5 between Anchorage and Seward on one of the steepest rail grades in the United States. To understand why this was a moment of truth for the new highly touted DMU, you have to know that Alaska is where the concept for the DMU was born. A self-propelled railcar was needed to carry passengers cost effectively and reliably between ports, cities and the new Anchorage airport rail terminal. There were two obstacles: One was that the railcar would have to be powerful enough to tow a coach while climbing some of the steepest grades in the United States. Second, the rail car would have to pass the newest FRA structural requirements.
