DMU – Fully Tested and Ready for
Commuter Transit Service

Colorado Railcar's DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) - a self-propelled commuter railcar with the capacity to pull coaches - has long been needed by rail planners and transit consultants to meet the challenge of expanding commuter systems in the face of limited funding. Now for the first time a US built, FRA structurally compliant DMU is fully tested and able to run in mixed freight service. Here are four reasons that transit agencies are taking notice of this innovative new railcar:

  • Full FRA Compliance - At one time considered impossible, the DMU meets all current FRA 49 CFR Part 238, APTA and ADA requirements without waivers.
  • Fuel and Maintenance Efficiency - The savings in operating expenses offer dramatic cost reductions when compared to locomotive-hauled commuter rail.
  • Neighborhood Friendly - The DMU is a clean, quiet, efficient, and an attractive addition to any community
    serviced by commuter rail.
  • Capable of Pulling Coaches - While maintaining fuel efficiency, the DMU has more than sufficient power to pull two commuter coaches.

The DMU successfully completed its testing at the Transportation Technology Center (TTC) in Pueblo, Colorado and made its debut at the 2002 APTA Annual Conference in Las Vegas. The DMU then embarked on a nationwide tour, receiving accolades from transit officials and consultants at every stop.
